Red Light Therapy: The Science of Photobiomodulation and Why It Works

The Body Shop Spa Team··8 min read

Your mitochondria absorb red and near-infrared light the same way plants absorb sunlight — and the results are measurable: more ATP, less inflammation, faster healing, and better skin.

Light as Medicine

The idea that light can heal sounds almost too simple. But the science behind photobiomodulation (PBM) — the clinical term for red light therapy — is robust, well-documented, and increasingly mainstream. Over 4,000 peer-reviewed studies have examined its effects on everything from wound healing and pain to depression and cognitive performance.

The key insight: your mitochondria contain a photoreceptor called cytochrome c oxidase that absorbs red (630–700nm) and near-infrared (800–1100nm) wavelengths of light. When stimulated by these wavelengths, mitochondria produce more ATP (cellular energy), generate less reactive oxygen species (oxidative stress), and trigger a cascade of downstream healing responses.

How It's Different From UV Tanning

Red light therapy is often confused with UV tanning, but they work through completely different mechanisms. UV light (used in tanning beds) stimulates melanin production in the skin — it works at the surface. Red and near-infrared light penetrate 2–5 centimeters into tissue, reaching muscle, bone, and even the brain through the skull.

Red light therapy produces no UV radiation, no heat damage, and no melanin response. It is safe for daily use and does not increase skin cancer risk.

Evidence-Backed Benefits of Red Light Therapy

  • Increased collagen production and reduced wrinkles
  • Accelerated wound healing and tissue repair
  • Reduced joint pain and inflammation
  • Improved muscle recovery after exercise
  • Enhanced thyroid function
  • Improved sleep quality via melatonin regulation
  • Reduced symptoms of depression and seasonal affective disorder
  • Improved hair growth in androgenic alopecia
  • Reduced acne and skin inflammation

The Body Shop Spa offers both panel-based red light therapy (Joovv-style full-body panels) and our cosmetic red light bed — a full-body immersive experience for skin rejuvenation and collagen stimulation.

How Many Sessions Does It Take?

Most people notice improved skin texture and reduced soreness within 2–4 sessions. For deeper therapeutic goals — joint pain, thyroid support, hair growth — consistent use over 8–12 weeks produces the most significant results. The research consistently shows that frequency matters more than session length: 3–5 sessions per week outperforms one long weekly session.

At The Body Shop Spa, our unlimited membership gives you access to red light therapy every day — making it easy to build the consistency that drives results.
