Restore — Look & Feel Your Best
A healthy, natural-looking tan in a clean, private suite — with the right bed for your skin type and your goals.
Not all tanning beds are the same — and understanding the difference between our three levels helps you get the results you actually want. At The Body Shop Spa, we offer Level 3, Level 4, and Level 5 UV tanning, each designed for a different purpose. Our staff will help you choose the right one based on your skin tone, your goals, and whether you're looking to build color, maintain it, or support your vitamin D levels.
The Level 5 is a high-pressure bed, which means it uses a higher ratio of UVA to UVB light. UVA penetrates deeper into the skin and builds color faster — ideal for quickly developing and deepening your tan. Because it has significantly less UVB, it's gentler on the skin and less likely to burn. However, if your goal is to boost your vitamin D levels, the Level 5 is not the best choice — UVB is the wavelength responsible for triggering vitamin D synthesis in the skin.
Our Level 4 is a stand-up unit. Standing while you tan eliminates the pressure points that occur when lying on an acrylic surface — and that matters more than you might think. When the acrylic presses against your skin, it slightly restricts circulation in those areas. Less circulation means less oxygen delivered to the skin — and you need oxygen to tan. This is why you get those white spots (we call them "bunny tails") right above your hip bones, and why your tummy tends to tan faster than your legs and arms: your torso has more oxygen-rich blood pumping directly from your heart and lungs.
Standing eliminates all of that. Every part of your body gets consistent UV exposure and consistent oxygen delivery — resulting in a more even, natural tan. The Level 4 also contains more UVB than the Level 5, making it a better option if vitamin D production is part of your goal.
Our Level 3 is a traditional lay-down bed — a great starting point for building a base tan. Like all lay-down beds, the acrylic surface creates pressure points where circulation is slightly reduced, which can result in uneven tanning in those areas. Alternating between the Level 3 and the Level 4 stand-up is a popular strategy for members who want to maintain even coverage while enjoying the comfort of both formats.
If supporting your vitamin D levels is a goal, use the Level 3 or Level 4 — both contain UVB, the wavelength that triggers vitamin D production in the skin. The Level 5 high-pressure bed, while excellent for building color quickly, has very little UVB and will not meaningfully contribute to vitamin D synthesis.
Quick Reference
Level 5 — High Pressure Lay Down
Fastest color. High UVA, low UVB. Not ideal for vitamin D.
Level 4 — Stand Up
Most even coverage. No pressure points. Good UVB for vitamin D.
Level 3 — Lay Down
Classic base tan. Alternate with Level 4 for even results.
Vitamin D?
Use Level 3 or Level 4 — both have UVB. Level 5 does not.
White Spots?
Caused by pressure reducing circulation and oxygen to the skin. The stand-up eliminates this.

Common Questions
Use the Level 3 lay-down or the Level 4 stand-up. Both contain UVB, which is the wavelength responsible for triggering vitamin D production in your skin. The Level 5 high-pressure bed has very little UVB and will not significantly boost your vitamin D levels.
Those white spots — we call them 'bunny tails' — appear where the acrylic surface presses against your skin. The pressure slightly reduces circulation in that area, which means less oxygen is delivered to the skin. You need oxygen to tan. This is also why your tummy tends to tan faster than your legs and arms: your core has more oxygen-rich blood pumping directly from your heart and lungs. The Level 4 stand-up eliminates pressure points entirely, so you get an even tan all over.
The Level 5 high-pressure bed builds color the fastest. It uses a higher ratio of UVA light, which penetrates deeper into the skin and develops color more quickly. It also has less UVB, so it's less likely to burn — but it won't support vitamin D production.
Absolutely — and many members do. A common approach is to use the Level 5 to build color quickly, then alternate with the Level 4 stand-up to even out coverage and maintain vitamin D support.
Most members tan 2–3 times per week to build and maintain their color. Our staff can help you create a schedule based on your skin type and goals.
